Astrologer Musings: Danny Carey Tool's Drummer Magician

Hexagon with a central alchemical symbol, surrounded by purple rays. Black background with text around the edges, creating a mystical vibe.

Wrote this back in July 2025 for my husband and small friend group, but wanted to share it here too :)

My friends and I got together to watch the live stream of the final Black Sabbath performance. A bunch of bands opened up for them, all playing covers of different Sabbath songs. One of these was a performance that featured Danny Carey. If you aren't married to a drummer/ Tool fan like I am, please allow me to fill you in. This guy's drum set is out of this world. Every piece forged with expertise, beautifully painted and engraved with sacred geometry and various planetary symbols on them…. These drums are literal art. Of course, seeing these on the big screen, my friends ask if that’s the Mercury symbol on Danny Carey‘s symbol.  I couldn’t remember what the particular symbol was at the time, but I was definitely familiar with it; my teacher uses it in his business logo for our classes, and I had seen it many times in various books and such. I actually thought it was for a fixed star glyph.

So, naturally, I needed to educate myself and report back on the symbol, because I know we all find the stuff interesting. Well, here is what I got:

Although I don’t officially know this, I believe Danny is 10000% most certainly a practicing Magician. I would be willing to bet a lot on this. (I also believe he is a freemason, but who isn't these days?)

Baby Carey (from Wikipedia ):

Text titled "Early Drumming" describes Danny's early musical influences starting at age three in Kansas, learning drums, and joining jazz ensemble.

The track:

Grown Man Carey in His Studio

Drummer playing in a wooden studio with a mystical floor design. Drum set has artistic patterns. Warm lighting, intense ambiance.
A purple and gold occult symbol with intricate lettering and patterns on a black background. Text: "Danny Carey's Domain" with date.

Okay, now for the symbol , I’ve read and seen it before as a baby astrologer when I was super into John Dee, he wrote a book on this symbol called: Monas Hieroglyphica. BUT let’s start with the writing around the heptagon that frames Mr. Carey’s sigil because, yes, I took the time to translate this from Latin :

“Our metal is the base of the philosophers’ fire.”

This is an alchemical phrase, riddled with symbolism, used throughout history by many a practitioner.

Let’s break this shit down:

-”Our metal” refers to the purified substance used and strived for in alchemy (not a literal metal).

-“The base” refers to the primal and essential necessity of a foundation or subterranean to hold creation.

-“Philosophers’ fire” is symbolic for the initatal divine/spiritual flame that transforms base matter into “gold”. A concept absolutely known and central to Hermetic and alchemical teachings.

A traditional Hermetic and alchemical phrase, its imagery is often found in magical or initiatory orders, and references Mercury (whose symbol is in the center), which is considered the most important alchemical substance.

As for the main emblem in the center is a composite glyph. One regularly used and seen in alchemic texts and used by Hermetic and astrological magic practitioners (Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa,Paracelsus, John Dee)

The sigil is a combination of:

•Venus symbol (♀) – Circle over a cross, representing matter over spirit, often linked to the feminine, beauty, and harmony.

•Taurus horns – The crescent-like horns above the circle evoke Taurus, a Venus-ruled sign. This may allude to Venus in Taurus, an exalted expression of Venusian qualities in a grounded, earthly way.

•Alchemical cross and crescent. These can symbolize the union of opposites, particularly spirit (circle), matter (cross), and receptivity or potential (crescent).

-Ignis, in Latin, literally means the element Fire.

***Fun Fact/ Food for thought tho….

The cazimi is represented here too. (when Mercury and Venus are perfectly conjoined in the “heart of the sun” and become

spiritually purified.

This entire emblem likely reflects the harmonization of the four elements through Venus, since it rules his Sun sign…

Soooo of course, now let’s consider his chart a lil (*no time of birth </3*)

Astrology birth chart with multicolored zodiac wheel and houses, shows planetary positions and aspects. Text: Danny Carey, Natal, May 10, 1961.

Although we don’t have a proper birth time for him, I would go out on a limb here and say it does look a little something like this in actuality. I would do anything to know which sign his moon is in because if he is an actual Leo rising… I would bet he is an 8H Pisces Moon….

8H themes surrounding taboo and occult arts could absolutely be at play here in Carey’s material life in the sign that is in itself extremely mystical and mysterious, and in more ways than one!

Here is why:

So, because we know his birthday, we know that his moon, whether it be in Pisces or Aries, still lands within the single most mysterious part of the zodiac, amongst us today. See how the Mars glyph repeats itself in the Decan wheel at Pisces 3 and Aries 1?

This little tic-tac-sized detail still baffles even the most knowledgeable modern experts on the decans' coughs. Even Austin Coppock, my teacher and favorite astrologer

We don’t know why it repeats- wtf does it mean?!
